The new Impreza Concept is Subaru’s way of teasing the next generation of its compact model, though, you’d be wise to take what you see here with plenty of grains of salt.
Subaru is no stranger to impressive studies that lead to hugely disappointing production cars, with the 2013 WRX Concept and the 2013 Legacy Concept quickly coming to mind.
What we’ll keep from this study in regards to the new Impreza that’s expected next year is the more traditional hatchback shape and certain styling cues like the tapered lights, the creases on the body and the more upright grille. Subaru also claims the design hints at their “future models as a whole”.
In this conceptual guise, the five-door hatch is 4,400mm (173.2 inches) long, 1,880mm (74.0 inches) wide and 1,440mm (56.7 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,670mm (105.1 inches), so it’s a tad shorter (-15mm), lower and wider than the current car.
The new 2017 Impreza will be Subaru’s first car to adopt their new and lighter “Global Platform”, while the compact model is expected to be powered by a next-generation of horizontally opposed engines with direct-injection and cylinder deactivation.
