Ford Shows Us How Their Interior Materials Get Tried & Tested [w/Video]

When it comes to new cars, odor perception can be crucial, especially since there are over 100 materials that make up the interior of a Ford vehicle.

Odor is perhaps the first thing that “hits” you when you’re about to climb on board a brand new car. It may not be as important as the overall quality or sturdiness of the materials, but it’s certainly a big part of that rather crucial first impression.

This is why Ford has a team of examiners which smell various samples of materials and rank them to help engineers achieve interiors free of disturbing odors, regardless of the environment outside.

Of course, throughout your car’s lifetime, the materials inside will eventually show signs of wear and tear, which is inevitable. As the miles pile on, there will be plenty of sitting down, leaning on arm rests, gripping the steering wheel and fiddling with the instruments, though Ford is determined to make sure all of their vehicles are up to the challenge.

In order to guarantee the durability of their fabrics, Ford engineers subject every single material used inside a Ford car to a series of meticulous tests, where they are either stretched, scratched, snagged, sniffed and even splashed with grease, dirt and coffee.

Watching the videos is pretty revealing, especially since Ford made sure to explain all of the procedures properly.
