2018 Fiat 124 Coupe Render Revives Classic Nameplate

Our friend Theophilus Chin has been at it again, manipulating the latest Mazda Miata-based Fiat 124 Spider into a fixed-roof, fastback style coupe.

The Fiat 124 Coupe was originally based on the 124 sedan range, rather than the 124 Sport Spider of 1966, which influences the latest version.

The transformation seems to complement the lines of the 124 Spider extremely well, lending it a GT-like quality, reminiscent of an Aston Martin DB7- especially around the rear haunches.

We’d hope the 1.4-litre MultiAir of the topless version would be swapped out for something with a bit more oomph, say Alfa Romeo’s 1.75-liter, 240hp from the 4C.

The 124 Spider is instrumental to Fiat’s success in the U.S. market and is built alongside the Miata in Japan. It differs both stylistically and mechanically from the MX-5, as while the donor car uses naturally aspirated engines, the Fiat model utilizes turbocharging.

Chin also coupe-ified the 124’s brother, the Mazda MX-5/Miata in 2014, albeit with a different window treatment; cheekily echoing the FD Mazda RX-7 of the 1990’s.

Which of these two makes a better coupe; the Italian-ised 124 or the original of the breed?

Dump that 1.4L engine (in any horse power amount) put a real engine in it- and build it!

  • benT

    add turbo to the 1.4l!!
    front has Ford looks.

    • Gish

It is a turbo, by the way.

  • Grumpy

Like the fiat coupe rendering. The Mazda one does look like the rx-7.

If it’s Chrysler decision, it’s not gonna happen.

  • Nate

Would be great if both Fiat and Mazda actually followed through with Coupe versions of the Fiat 124 Spider and Mazda MX5, see the appeal of Convertibles yet have always preferred the Coupe variants.

  • BrucieBruce

Coupe looks MUCH better than 124 drop top!

  • hey

It looks like a mini Dodge Viper.

Hey…..someone call Carlos Ghosn and tell him to hurry up and build the Datsun 240Z already ‘cuz if you squint just right at this render, it kinda has that ’70s 240Z retro modern vibe.

I was thinking the same thing exactly! One of the best looking sports cars ever made hands down. Good call.

When did this turn into a Z thread? Not complaining or anything… 🙂

        • Rick Alexander

You beat me to it! That’s the first thing that came to mind, when I saw the side profile. They need to build something like this yesterday!

  • Kaptnkauto

Seriously good looking car. To me it looks way better as a coupe and way better then the miata. And now that the Abarth is coming.. man man, it’s going to sound so good…

  • javier

How about: “Magnifico!” Nice rendering, Mr. Chin.

  • gary4205

Reminds me of a 1970 Datsun 240Z, one of the nicest looking sporty cars of the era. Yes please!

  • Fiat_fan

Coupe is better and sedan would be the best!

considering that alfa romeo doesn’t have any 4-seater hot-hatches, this could be my future affordable Italian exotic dream sportscar! (“affordable” being the operative word. lol). all i want is a sleek Italian 2-door, 4-seater, hatchback, AWD …. would be both sporty & practical that i could drive it all year-round in my snowy/rainy climate of the northeast. i hope fiat makes this.
