Less than two years after the introduction of the new 911 GTS series back in October of 2015 and Porsche is gearing up to bring the facelifted model into line with the rest of the range.

This means a handful of cosmetic revisions, but most importantly, the adoption of Porsche’s new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter horizontally opposed engine that will replace the previous 991 GTS’ 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six which produced 30hp more than the Carrera S at 424hp (430PS).

We expect similar power gains for the 991.2 GTS over the facelifted 991.2 Carrera S that pushes out 420PS (414hp) and 500Nm (369lb ft) from its 3.0-liter turbo six, so somewhere around 450 horses.

Once again, power will be channeled through either a standard seven-speed manual gearbox with a mechanical rear differential lock or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with an electronically controlled rear locking differential.

GTS buyers will be able to choose from two- and four-wheel drive versions as well as from three body styles, Coupe, Convertible and the Targa model we spied here. All models will come with Porsche’s Sport Chrono package, PASM active suspension, throatier sports exhaust system and the 44mm (1.7 inch) wider rear hips of the Carrera 4 models as standard.

The prototype 911 GTS Targa we scooped testing outside the Nürburgring in Germany incorporated all the visual changes from the regular 991.2 Carrera and Carrera S models, including the new door handles, headlights with four-point DRLs, taillights, rear bumper and engine lid with vertical louvres, and then some more. By that, we point to the blackened targa roll over bar and the new front bumper with a similar styling to the one used on the GT3.

Since the tester was on the move, we weren’t able to nab the interior, but we should see the same improvements as on the rest of the 991.2 lineup including the new steering wheel design with a driving mode switch and the latest infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen.
