Bentley Boss Talks Next Continental, New Sports Car And SUV

According to Bentley chairman & CEO Wolfgang Durheimer, they are currently trying to decide between building a production version of the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept or yet another SUV.

Talking to Autocar recently, Durhaimer reiterated that Bentley has the aforementioned options on the table. “One is an SUV – more sporting than the Bentayga. The other is a car in the mold of the EXP 10 Speed 6, which we first showed at the Geneva motor show in 2015. The feedback on this car was so phenomenal that we now have the task of deciding what we will do first.”

“You will know by the end of the year. We are working on both. If we had limitless money and manpower, I would do both at the same time. There will be a sequenced approach and you’ll soon see what we go for first.”

While the sports car/supercar might make more sense since they only recently unveiled their first SUV in the form of the Bentayga, the fact that a new Continental GT is also on its way complicates an already tough decision.

Speaking of which, when Durheimer was asked to talk about the next Continental GT, he went on to say that it will “create even more attention and frenetic applause than the first-generation model.”

“The car will be simply stunning. The ride and chassis tune, as well as the connectivity and entertainment, will bring the Continental GT to a level that hasn’t been achieved so far.”

He added he’s very happy with the MSB platform (used on the second-gen Panamera), as it allowed for a “new approach to the matrix and proportions,” from a design perspective.

“I’m in love with this car. We had a design presentation and even people that are not in our core team were speechless. I predict the highest-volume uptake for the Continental ever.”

The Bentayga is already here and a little Bentley SUV derived from a Q5 or Macan with V6 engines couldn’t match with the brand’s identity.
A Bentayga V8 is the best thing that could lower the price compared to the only W12 available now.

The EXP 10 Speed 6 which is rumoured to be called Barnato (a Bentley race driver from 1920’s) is the better choice to extend Bentley’s line-up.
This Barnato will embrace this racing heritage and incarnate the modern Bentley sports spirit.
And with V8 engines, it could also let the Continental be a pure luxury car with the W12 engine.

And now in Europe, the 2 seats sports cars market is in huge development.
The Porsche 911 has been joined by the Mercedes AMG GT, the Jaguar F-Type and sooner the all-new Aston Martin Vantage. The next BMW 6 series and Maserati Granturismo will drop their 4 seats versions and also be part of that 2 seats sports cars market.

So a Bentley Barnato sportier and lighter than Continental but still luxurious inside has completely his place on the market.

I bet it will be the SUV.
Automotive enthusiasts want the coupe, marketing gyus will get the SUV.

Well, whatever makes them money so they can keep existing!

        • Six Thousand Times

Yes. So call it for the SUV. I blame the public.

  • Six Thousand Times

I’d take the sports car but Bentley will obviously do the SUV. They’ll sell a gazillion of them and it will have been the right decision. Damn this modern world.

I wish they’d do custom one-offs, like Lambo and Ferrari. Maybe they don’t think they can demand the premium for million dollar Bentley’s? Or maybe the consumer will demand more from a million dollar Bentley than Bentley is willing(or able) to give them? Performance is the only way, anyways, to charge that kind of money, and performance is a route that would juice up the Bentley brand in a non-Bentley way, but such are the times. I think Bentley can go this route, if it does so tastefully, in Bugatti Chiron fashion. But, something short of hypercars. $700,000(or more) for an 800hp hybrid coupe that can be a stepping stone below the Chiron.
