Porsche confirmed its willingness to build an all-electric vehicle with the unveiling of the Mission E Concept, but it appears that the German company wants to be the best there is in the segment.

That means beating Tesla, a car manufacturer that has evolved along with the niche, helping create a new customer profile in the process. Even so, Automobile reports that Porsche is fairly confident it will do much better than the Silicon Valley-based company, as an unnamed engineer (not working directly on the project) said that Mission E will be “something special”, with a hefty amount of work being done to it in order to make absolutely sure it will be “a true Porsche through and through”.

So special, in fact, that a Porsche product manager said it will be entirely different than any of its competitors, even more capable than Tesla’s products:

“The thing about [Tesla’s] Ludicrous mode is that it’s a façade. Two launches saps the whole battery. That won’t be the case with the Mission E. You’ll be able to run it hard, over and over; the battery will not overheat, the power control module will not overheat, and the seats will not suck.”

The Mission E concept has a total system power output of over 600 HP (440 kW), sprints from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.5 seconds and boasts a 500+ km (310+ miles) range. Combine these figures with the alleged ability of continuously running without overheating, and you’ve got yourself a class leader.

By current standards, at least. We’ll have to wait and see what changes by the time Porsche actually launches the vehicle into production.
