You can expect to find Civics on the road just about anywhere you go in the world. But Honda develops other models specifically for local markets. Like the new Gienia.

Showcased this weekend at the Chengdu Motor Show, the Gienia is a new model to be produced in China through Honda’s joint venture with Dongfeng. Described as a “compact crossover hatchback,” it appears stylistically similar to the new Civic hatchback, but perhaps smaller and with a bit more flourish thrown in.

We’re not sure what Honda means by the “crossover” part, because to us it looks more like a sport hatch than a rough-rider, decidedly devoid of the lower body cladding and wheel arches we’ve come to expect from ruggedized models. The sloping tailgate and rear spoiler speak more of on-road performance than off, but we’ll reserve judgement for when we see it from more angles. It shouldn’t be long now, considering that Honda revealed this solitary “teaser” image on the eve of the show’s opening.
