City Of Beijing Wants To Switch All Its Taxis For EVs

In a bid to battle its air pollution, the city of Beijing could convert its entire taxi fleet from petrol-powered cars to electric vehicles.

That is the goal of a draft work program on air pollution control for Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and surrounding areas this year in a move which could cost approximately 9 billion yuan ($1.3 billion), reports National Business Daily.

There are almost 70,000 petrol taxis in Beijing and the plan says that alongside replacing all the existing taxis with EVs, all new taxis to hit the streets must be electric.

While it is currently unclear if and when this draft will be passed as law, the city will also require huge investments in its charging infrastructure to support an additional 70,000 EVs on the streets. It is reported that when Beijing added 200 electric vehicles to its taxi fleet in 2014, some drivers had to wait for up to six hours at charging stations.

Physicists at the University of California assert that approximately 1.6 million people die in China because of polluted air every year.

“better late than never” to finally try and do something I suppose. why they waited so long for the problem to get this bad is beyond me. but is that part of their political system?

At least they get it done. If this was in North America, all the taxi drivers would invent their own understanding of the law to argue that it’s their legal right to not drive EV’s, and to be as slovenly and ill-mannered behind the wheel as they like.

That’s a good question. Their system is the opposite from ours “the need of the many outweighs the need of the few”. They have pushing electric cars as part of their overall solution for everyone. They don’t want to be dependent on oil because they don’t have it. The battery tech has only recently gotten really good with the higher mileage so maybe that was what’s been holding them back. In the Guangzhou area – the taxi services use propane or natural gas. Takes up the whole trunk – barely room for luggage. The trunk ends up left opened with bungee cords to hold it down.

“Physicists at the University of California assert that approximately 1.6 million people die in China because of polluted air every year.” Umm, that air makes its way here too, it doesn’t stay in China. This is a giant fishbowl after all. My cousin work in SoCal and drives to Baja to visit his company’s facility there. He said that this past week he saw a bunch of foam in the ocean along his drive and it smelled putrid. Hours later its on the news that companies in Mexico dumped 150mil gallons of raw sewage into the ocean with the government’s consent and its making its way north to California beaches, which they likely knew it would. WTF is wrong with these people? Filthy air and filthy oceans affect their own kids and families too!! Fkn hell this gets me riled up. I can’t understand the ass backward environmental policies of so many of these 3rd world countries where profits come ahead of all that is good. Wait, that sounds like here too…hmmm….

        China needs to be stopped

Unfortunately, it is not just 3rd world countries that pollute with sheer abandon. I know that in Halifax, NS, Canada, no one was allowed to swim in the harbour, because it was being used as a raw sewage dump.
It has been remedied, only a few years ago, with new sewage treatment plants, but it had gone on for as long as Halifax has been around.

      • Mill0048

Agreed, no country is without fault. Seems the common thread here is human greed.

  • smartacus

all the environmental controls on this side of the pond can’t stop that.
