Marchionne Says People Buy Lamborghinis Because They Can’t Get Ferraris

Frank Sinatra once said “You buy a Ferrari when you want to be somebody. You buy a Lamborghini when you are somebody.” Ferrari chief executive Sergio Marchionne disagrees.

While talking with Car Magazine at the Geneva Motor Show, Marchionne suggested that many people simply buy Lamborghinis because they can’t get Ferraris.

“I have a lot of respect for Stefano Domenicali. But a lot of people buy Lamborghinis because they can’t get their hands on a Ferrari,” he said.

It is no secret that becoming a part of the exclusive Ferrari family isn’t easy. You need to work your way up with various models before even getting the slightest chance of purchasing a limited-edition model.

Alongside his critique of Lamborghini owners, Marchionne also reconfirmed that Ferrari’s big V12 engines will stick around in their naturally-aspirated form for years to come and be coupled with electric motors. He said that “[The next step] is only two years away, just wait,” suggesting that the company’s new V12 hybrid model is just around the corner.

    FLAME WAR!!!!

  • MMNYC18

Agree with Marchionne, Ferraris are more exclusive.

    • LWOAP

      And slower.

  • BGM

After the 599 I switched from Ferrari to Lamborghini as my *lotto car*. Ferrari’s well known shenanigans don’t help their image with someone like me. Admittedly the 812 is a good looking car, the first one since the 599, but I’d still take the Aventador. German engineering on Italian sheetmetal. Sorry but unless the 812 comes with Charlotte McKinney inside they lose.

    • Belthronding Tinuviel

so you would pick ferrari 812 with charlotte mckinney inside it, good point.
but my question is that, why shannon mckinney who drives ferrari 812 would choose you?

      • BGM

Dude, what have I don’t to you that you burst my bubble like that? Who was I hurting?!

        • Belthronding Tinuviel

NOOOOOOOOOO. İ am SORRY if i hurt you. İ was just joking. My apologies.
          You deserve charlotte mckinney ,TWİCE!

    • Bo Hanan

“German engineering on Italian sheetmetal.” Cool heat.
      …what could be better?

    • nastinupe

You didn’t like the F12? Come on!!!

  • Ray Filetti

That is a nonsensical statement. But Mr Marchionne is not usually one to make rash statements, so It makes me wonder that he is worried about Ferrari for some reason, and he is attempt to colour the image landscape and put doubt in Lamborghini buyers minds. I can’t think why though, because Ferrari les are booming and are not under any sales threat. Maybe it was a rash statement after all?

    • supermanuel

“But Mr Marchionne is not usually one to make rash statements.” Say what? Mr Marchionne’s propensity to make idiotic, inaccurate, rash statements is literally, literally, legendary.

  • Honda NSX-R

    Sergio, Sergio, Sergio.

  • baofe

    Marchionne needs to stfu

  • GE90man

    nope. nope. nope.

  • Carlos Gamarra

this is gonna start some serious shit

    • LWOAP

No that won’t, this will. Nissan GTR’s are overrated POS that only immature 16 year olds like. 😉

      • Belthronding Tinuviel

damn it, living without a purpose but who criticises carlos with gtr:)

      • Carlos Gamarra

If you’re trying to think im a GTR fanboy, then you’re wrong lmao

        • LWOAP

I was just trying to start some drama is all.

  • Status

The people who can’t get a Lamborghini have to ‘settle’ for a Ferrari.

But then again, Sergio is trying to court VW this week.

  • Zandit75

Here is physical proof that Frank Sinatra is more relevant in 2017 than Sergio Marchionne.

  • Benjamin B.

And Californias aren’t real Ferraris. Donald Trump says California isn’t America. Lol.

    • Ameer Hassan Tajaldeen

  • Benjamin B.

I never cared for Lamborghini tractors… I mean sports cars. Lol. Ferrari does have more history. That’s why I’m a Ford guy.

    • Ameer Hassan Tajaldeen

      another lol

  • Benjamin B.

People buy Ferraris because they can’t afford Ford GTs.

  • ZenithEyEvil

    Sergio, it’s time to go.

  • Big Black Duck

is it me or do I see a lot of the Viper here?

  • KenjiK

That means that, according to marchionne himself, for someone to buy a Ferrari instead of a Lambo, the former has to be a limited edition.
Marchionne is actually (unwillingly) admitting that in the eye of their very own customers, a “base” (meaning non-limited) Lamborghini is a better and more attractive car than a base Ferrari…

  • KenjiK

There is also a saying : “you buy a Ferrari when you want to be someone, you buy a Lamborghini when you are someone.”

    • read

It says that in the article

      • KenjiK

Missed the first sentence, my bad.

I like Ferraris, but they ask far too much money for what they offer. I guess I can say that about a lot of cars out there, but Ferrari I think is more egregious in this manner. There are much better alternatives out there, and to say people buy Lamborghinis because they can’t get a Ferrari, is just plain stupid.

Now if he is doing making crass statements, how about getting the Alfieri into production and making Lancia relevant?

    • Vassilis

They ask the same money as their competitors. The 488 costs as much as a Huracan and it’s a much faster and better car to drive.

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

if they can’t get ferraris, LET THEM EAT CAKE!
    (Marie Antoinette Marchionne)

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

sergio said that people have to wait for 2018 to get their 488gtb,gtc4 lusso t and california t.
plus, he thinks that is why customers are going to lambo instead.

sergio, lambo does not have such a weird looking shooting brake turbo and a convertible GTs. they just have supersports and sometimes hypersports.

potential ferrari customers of a shooting brake and convertible GT would never go for lambo’s hardcore aventador and ‘ring record holder huracan Performante for sure. Because these are completey different segments!

  • SteersUright

Nonsense. Both brands produce some stunning and incredibly desirable cars. But Lambo does need a LaFerrari competitor already. And both Lambo and Ferrari need a Panamera and Cayenne competitor if they plan to stay viable over the long haul.

  • Six_Tymes

The Super Fast, is Super fabulous. Love it!

  • This guy never miss an occasion to just shut up.

  • Finkployd

Well he’s somewhat right; it’s also the reason why some limited editions Ferrari are worth more on second hand than brand new
However it doesn’t necessarily mean every Lambo owner wanted a Ferrari to begin with

  • Wandering_Spirit

I believe Frank Sinatra was right, then….now they are on par.

  • kimbentsen

I never understood the limited racetrack cars with number plates. The 812 superfast is the ultimate in my book. I do not care for a LaFerrari or special edition supercar. The unlimited models are more than fine. Each to his own, I guess.

  • Balcis

not for a 488 or smaller mid engine series . not an exactly correct statement imo.

  • Evo45

So they elect for who can have a Ferrari? I’m confused.

  • Nordschleife

While Sergio cleaned up his statement nicely. I can’t see people who by Ferrari , people who have multiple vehicle in their garages say. Hey I’ll just take a Lambo instead. Regardless to exclusivity or not if a person wants a Ferrari, they will wait for a Ferrari. Again this is a performance car. So wealthy people will have their Range Rovers, AMG GT’s or whatever to use while they wait for their Ferrari. why can’t people who just like the Lamborghini styling buy Lamborghini’s. I personally like Lamborghini more than I like Ferrari but I can’t afford either one.

  • Sjaak

pretentious marchionne mindgame. sometimes it works…mostly counterproductive,. he feels the breath of vw in his neck

  • gadgety
