Infiniti’s New York Auto Show Debut Likely Teases 2018 QX80

While April 1st is offered for tom foolery, Infiniti is dead serious about introducing a new SUV at the 2017 New York Auto Show that runs from April 12 to 23.

Beyond the teaser picture you see here, all Infiniti said about the vehicle today is this: “Huge unveil. April 11, 2017. New York. #INFINITI #EmpowerTheDrive #NYIAS”.

We don’t need to tell you that it’s an SUV – you can see that for yourself, but if we had to speculate, we’d go with a concept model previewing a redesign for the QX80, not only because it’s “huge”, but also because of the blacked out A-pillars on the windshield and the fact that it’s due for a revamp next year.

It could also be giving us a first look at a more luxurious and fancier version of the updated 2018 (or possibly, 2019MY) QX80 with a more aggressive bumper and grille design featuring an LED logo.

Another tidbit worth mentioning are the new headlamps that are similar in design to Infiniti’s more recent concepts like the QX Inspiration and QX50 crossovers.

The current generation of the QX80 that is based on the Nissan Patrol has been in production since 2010 as the 2011MY QX56, before receiving a mild facelift and a new designation in 2014 as the 2015MY QX80.

Infiniti V8s may be discontinued anytime soon because of the Twin Turbo V6 VR30 but don’t take the words from me since this is a rumor

I don’t know since the recently revamped Armada and Titan remained with the 5.6L V8s.

And I also figured that this chassis for the upcoming all-new qx80 might used for the all-new pajero/montero/shogun since you knew what happened recently

  • ErnieB

    This looks very nice!

    • Bo Hanan

      Well it took long enough.

  • Nordschleife

I swear every Infiniti truck seems so old to me. I feel like they should have a year of the SUV and the QX50/70/80 should all be replaced in that year. Also I love the Infiniti headlights so I hope the new QX50 has this look even if it’s an option. If not I’d rather they stop giving all the concepts these lights.

    • IFDU

I feel the same way. One area I wish Infiniti would work on is their infotainment system that is inconsistent with each model. Some models are still using old UI from some years ago. It shouldn’t take a redesign to change that just a simple update with a mid cycle refresh (ex: Q70 is using an older UI I believe).

      • Nordschleife

I agree with you as well. I guess Infiniti has a lot to work on. They need to hurry up so they can stay competitive.

    • U8INIT

      You said that right.

  • Big Black Duck

they are finally getting rid of the haphazard curves and going for more definition…love it..

What the current QX was launched, I think some time around 2008, I thought the response of laugher and ridicule from buyers would have caused them to immediately revise it. Boy, was I wrong.

    Boss!

I would like a little more sophisticated look to the QX80 but overall it a cool daily driver! Love the width!

“Luxury Car Maker Makes Moderate Incremental Updates While Competition Continues To Fly By”

    Expect:
    same old powertrain
automation features already proven for 15 years in other cars (self parking, adaptive cruise, MAYBE lane assist)

“updated” styling that looks moderately different from previous years, but risks nothing

Tesla’s release model makes all other car companies BORING AF. Other manufacturers need to start wowing people before Tesla’s lineup gets diverse.

    • An Existing Person

There could be nothing more incorrect about everything that you just said.

      • Wes

Good point. I wasn’t convinced at first, but you provided so many great counterpoints, I’m left no choice but to apologize for my incorrect statement. If anyone wants a Model S hmu, I’m looking to get rid of mine for one of these exciting new ICE cars with exciting new features that have hardly been around for 20+ years!

  • U8INIT

Where the heck is the all new QX70 on mars?! I expect that over the QX80

    • IFDU

I wouldn’t be surprised if that model is discontinued honestly. It started the “4 door coupe SUV” craze and couldn’t compete once the Germans took a swing at it. (and I still believe to this day is the best looking in its class.)

      • U8INIT

Please don’t put those thoughts in the atmosphere. Infiniti needs to storm with a proper SUV assault and turn up the heat in the segment. It’s like they do it first then loose interest. Kinda like the Dory of the auto industry…

      • dn12005

Would you be surprise WHEN it shows up MY18?

        • IFDU

As neglected it has been and little to no news on it recently yes, yes I would be. I would love to see a new one actually so if it does show up in MY2018, no complaint here. 🙂

          • dn12005

Final design has been signed off by Infiniti and prototypes are being tested now.

      • Nordschleife

I feel like it will still continue to exist if only to keep the lineup full but then I think it may not depending on how big the QX50 grows. What if Infiniti made the next QX70 a coupè version of the QX50. What do you think about that?

        • Tumbi Mtika

          NO.

Because then it would be FWD.

          • Nordschleife

I never thought about it like that. While there has been advancements in technology plus it could just offer standard all wheel drive but I understand where you and IFDU are coming from so scratch my QX50 comment lol.

        • IFDU

Just what Tumbi stated–it will be a FWD coupe which I think defeats the purpose if they are trying to compete with the German SUV coupes. I still think it will be RWD if/when they reveal it. If the Q50 is still RWD then yeah it’s possible it will stay RWD. The FM platform underpins both (correct me if I’m wrong) so I see no problem in just tacking a new updated body/fresh interior/UI, which I don’t mind.

  • Looks good

  • Bash

    This will scare children!

    • Tumbi Mtika

      GOOD.

  • TheBelltower

Once Infiniti replaces that ghetto-looking, sorry excuse for a full sized SUV, then maybe they can at some point be considered a real premium brand.

    • Big Black Duck

u mean that ugly POS called the QX80?..then what will people poor taste who want to look rich drive?..

      • Kash

        A BMW?

  • Tumbi Mtika

If this isn’t bullshit, then the new QX80 may finally look good!

  • Kash

So that’s Nissan’s plan, Infiniti gets the new model then Nissan gets it once Infiniti stops using it. Got it.

    • dn12005

LOL…getting every cent worth out of the platform…and then some!

      • Kash

I mean it’s not a horrible plan, it just cheapens everything, but they’re doing it to the affordable brand so i guess that’s still okay…

        • dn12005

I would like to think that, that is more money going into R&D. I mean, this platform has been paid for 10X over…at least, I hope so!

          • Kash

I’m kinda hoping it just means their reliability will go up. They have enough time to work out the kinks.
