So He Was Serious… Musk Takes Delivery Of Tunnel Boring Machine And Starts Digging

Despite some skepticism, it has turned out that Elon Musk was indeed serious about forming a tunnel company and recently took delivery of a huge boring machine.

The Tesla founder first made headlines in December after randomly publishing a number of tweets claiming he was going to start a tunnel boring company. Evidently, he wasn’t just joking around and has even named his latest venture ‘The Boring Company’.

Business Insider reports that Musk began to dig a small tunnel in the SpaceX parking lot in February to accommodate cars and eventually serve as the basis for an underground transportation network. Although the outspoken chief executive is free to create tunnels on SpaceX grounds, he will need permits from the city of Los Angeles if he is serious about solving traffic issues with tunnels.

It is thought that Musk intends on eventually building a complete underground network that could include as many as 30 levels of tunnels for cars and the Hyperloop.

Clearly, Musk is having fun with his latest venture and in a February interview with Bloomberg, said he was considering a number of other names for the company.

“My other idea was to call it Tunnels R Us and to essentially troll Toys “R” Us into filing a lawsuit. Now we’ve decided to troll AT&T instead! We’re going to call it American Tubes and Tunnels,” he jokingly said.

Should I start shorting him? Umh. Nah. I’ll wait for my next Uber driver to tell me he’s buying Tesla’s stock.

    • MP4-12C

And go on about how he bought Enron and Blockbuster stocks in the past, but now he is totally sure that he will make a serious buck on it.

As the reports of Teslas catching fire grew daily, Musk knew he had to find a way out.

start diggin ill be here laughing

    Musk got humor.

  • How on earth does he have time for all these companies?!

I don’t understand how anyone can speak of Musk with any sort of seriousness. Since a century ago scifi magazines have been talking about going to Mars, super fast transportation, intricate subterranean networks that allow a green and beautiful surface, the melding of man and machine. But when this guy says we’re gonna be living on Mars in 10 years, we’re gonna have a physically impossible hyperloop or that he’s going to be boring tunnels under LA his every word is taken as gospel. He’s a snake oil salesman!!!! I want to go on record here with grand pronouncements of my own: in 10 years we will be traveling in starships powered by antimatter. I’m working on reversing aging so that everyone stays a healthy and good looking 25 years old forever. As aside projects I’m working on moving objects with the power of my mind, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a perpetuum mobile machine. Oh, and I’m also dating some empty headed VS model. There. I’m the new Elon Musk. Just without money. Yet.

“I don’t understand how anyone can speak of Musk with any sort of seriousness”
Because he does things maybe ?

      • BGM

He does things? He TALKS about doing things that are either A. impossible to do (man-machine meld, living on Mars in 10 years, hyperloop) or B. already done (tunneling, batteries, rockets).

        • Zed68

Sure, Jan… it’s not like there are many other things that actually made it…

  • kachuks

I wish him luck with his boring project.

  • LeftLanePrius

Many larger cities haven’t really upgraded their highway infrastructure and would probably cost too much to buy out the land, going underground should make it much easier to add more channels.

    • BGM

In Miami they built a tunnel under the port in order to carry commercial traffic. It’s about half a mile long, a bit of it under water. It cost $2.5B and god knows how many years. Now you begin to see the scope of what this loudmouth moron is talking about: *I’m just gonna tunnel under LA*.

Look up Boston’s “Big Dig” if you want to see how truly idiotic this whole thing is.

    Bad idea!
Better off looking into electric powered flying machines, to avoid traffic.
