All-Electric VW Racer Wants To Set The Record Straight At Pikes Peak

Volkswagen wants to set a record next year at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, and this all-electric prototype teased here will be the one to attempt it.

The prototype features AWD and uses electricity alone. VW is also planning on becoming the world’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles, and projects like this one represent stepping stones.

“Our electric race car will be equipped with innovative battery and drive technology. The extreme stress test posed by Pikes Peak will give us important feedback that will benefit future development, and it will showcase our products and their technologies,” said Dr Frank Welsch.

The prototype is still being developed by Volkswagen Motorsport, who last attempted to tackle Pikes Peak back in 1987 with a twin-engined Golf that barely missed out on crossing the line.

“The race on Pikes Peak is a new beginning for us. We are developing an all-electric race vehicle for the first time,” explains Sven Smeets, VW Motorsport director. “The project is also an important milestone in our new motorsport orientation. Our team is literally electrified about taking on this incredible challenge.”

Those attempting to climb Pikes Peak need to conquer a 12.4 mile-long (20 km) course that climbs 4,700 feet (1.4 km) towards the summit at just over 14,000 feet (4.2 km) above sea level. Next year’s event will take place on June 24th.
