This Modified Mercedes-Benz CLS Is A Retina-Burning Abomination

The Mercedes-Benz CLS is a quite attractive sedan, particularly in its first generation guise. With flowing yet aggressive bodywork, the sleek sedan looks both sporty and refined and, to our eyes, way better than its successor.

Sadly, the owner of this CLS550 from New Jersey has ruined the good looks of the car with a number of questionable modifications.

The bodywork of the car shared on Reddit has been tweaked and a set of wheel covers fitted at the rear. Even when done right, like on the Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta, wheel covers don’t look pretty, and when they’re just tacked on like these ones, are just awful.

The weird ‘upgrades’ don’t stop there, as the owner has plastered an AMG badge onto the trunklid (in the wrong position…) and stuck on a number of chrome trimmings, including on the rear decklid and around the triangular taillights.

Labeling this thing hideous would be the understatement of the year. It also goes to show that money are not necessarily accompanied by good taste…

I think the inspiration for the rear wheel covers comes from the Brabus cars, not Zondas.

Taste is optional when accessorizing your car.

what, you didn’t know merc is launching a new Citroen ?

This reminds me of the gaudy accessorizing of Cadillac’s in the 1970’s, called “Pimp-mobiles”, They were featured in the James Bond movie, Live and Let Die.

    • Oh my God, like Durnham Cadillac, shagpile interior, fake side exhaust, huge 1930s inspired light and paint that comes from Liberace closet. So awful.

Well, tastes aside, why would you do this on a perfectly fine car like the CLS? I’d understand if they tried to make a pretty basic sedan look a little nicer and more interesting (they would have failed, anyway), or if it were an expensive and well-made tuning, but…why this!?

Rear “Fender Skirts”; like an Olds 98 and others in the fifties to seventies…. and the white sidewall tires…??

A message to the car owner.
    Congratulations, you ruined the car.

  • I wouldn’t be surprised if the owner like Excalibur or something retro-awful monstrosity.

I see some of the worst mods in the NY & NJ area. Another mod that’s really hideous is when someone takes a modern, sleek looking car and they put a carriage top, luggage rack over the trunk and wire wheels with white walls on it… WTF?!?!?!

and yeah… This is terrible. Maybe he’s trying to make his car more aerodynamic so he can get a high speed record on the NJ Turnpike:)

OMG i knew someone in NJ who had one of the firsts E39 M5’s
and some colleague kept suggesting to buy a roof cargo box :0

      • john1168

LOL… I have a buddy of mine who lives in the PA DE area and he see’s a lot of weird crap too. He was considering making a book with pictures of all the weird cars he’s seen.

I’ve seen worse. Like those renders you be posting on this website.

Looks like a disco era pimp-mobile!

    Good job New Jersey!

I’ll be the first to say that I don’t think this thing is the least bit attractive… but I have to hand it to this owner, he/she is doing their thing. They don’t GAF what anyone else thinks. I have some respect for that. This would sure make me smile on the road, not so sure if it was stock.

I just can’t look at the cheap chrome, reminds me of cars in Southeast Asia! Also, the fake vents are cringeworthy and rear wheel covers look only good on classic American cars.
