Mercedes-Benz will fill the gap between the GLA and GLC with an entirely new crossover called the GLB.

Previously referred to as the ‘mini G-Wagen‘, it will be based on the same platform as the new generation A-Class, and is said to arrive with a five-seat configuration and seven seats as an optional extra.

Development of the crossover continues in various parts of the globe, with engineers testing all of its features. However, in between making sure that everything works as it should, the company already presented pre-production versions to US dealers, reports AutoNews, adding that it will arrive in showrooms across the country in the fourth quarter of next year.

The German automaker won’t export it from Europe, apparently, as the new GLB is expected to be built in Mexico. The facility in charge of putting the upcoming GLB together is located in Aguascalientes, and it’s part of a new Daimler-Nissan joint venture. This is where Mercedes will also assemble the new A-Class Sedan, which will be available in the US, unlike the hatchback version that’s being kept out of America.

Pricewise, the Mercedes-Benz GLB will be a tad more expensive than the current GLA, which can be had from $33,400 in the USA. In its base form, the GLB won’t pass the GLC’s base $40,050 price, but if you go crazy with the options list, it will definitely become more expensive.

In addition to the first-ever A-Class Sedan and GLB, Mercedes will also launch other vehicles in North America. Three of them, the new G-Class, CLS and AMG GT four-door coupe will cross the Atlantic this year.
