Vauxhall To Phase Out The Zafira And Astra GTC

It’s not just in the US that passenger cars and minivans are being replaced by crossovers and SUVs. The trend is evident in Europe, too, where Vauxhall (and potentially Opel by extension) has axed two of its models.

Autocar reports that both the Zafira Tourer and Astra GTC are being discontinued at least in the UK as customers flock to more rugged-looking vehicles.

A spokesman for Vauxhall told the magazine that the Zafira Tourer is being phased out in the context of “a significant move away from MPVs and the growing popularity of SUVs,” and that the GTC “was highly successful when there was demand for three-door coupés” but that such demand no longer exists.

An MPV (as the Europeans call their minivans), the Zafira has been a mainstay of Vauxhall and Opel’s lineup since 1999, and is currently in its third iteration, introduced in 2011. Meanwhile the GTC was based on the previous-generation Astra, but was not replaced when the new Astra arrived in 2015. That means it’s been carrying on in its current form since 2011, leaving it more than a little long in the tooth at this point.

Now part of the PSA Group, Opel and Vauxhall aren’t giving up on passenger cars altogether, though. The same publication reports that the next-generation Corsa will breed an electric eCorsa, ostensibly to take the place of the Chevy Bolt-based Ampera-e.

Though collaboration will likely carry on for the next few years, the European brands are moving away from sharing products with their former owners at General Motors and towards common development with Peugeot, Citroën, and DS.

Good, now that Opel is out of GM’s death hands, it may actually start building better cars, not working with GM’s crappy hand-me-downs.

    • Cobrajet

In GM, the hand-me-downs came from Opel, no the other way around. Opel is just going to restyle Peugeots now.

    Three door coupe, eh?
Pretty sure that’s a three door hatchback.
Still, marketing BS and all that.

Technically, it didn’t share it’s body with the 5 door hatch, unlike say the Golf, or Audi A3, or the first generations of Ford Focus, and was wider, lower and more dramatic looking, so I guess it’s – despite it’s hatchback shape – borderline qualifying as a coupe (just like the VW Scirocco). At least way more than stuff like an Audi Q8 or BMW X6…

      • Loquacious Borborygmus

Yeah, I never thought of the scirocco as a coupe either.
I know some like to extend the definition but to me it’s a Two door sedan with a lowered /sweeping roofline

The GTC is a good looking car but that’s it! For a sporty car it lacks aggression and personality. For me it sits too high and the proportions are that of a hatchback. Opel need a front end that is unique and charaterful, something that shouts Opel (Vauxhall). Not since the Senator has GM Europe had an instantly recognisable front signature.

Didn’t they try that with the front of the Adam and then Corsa? It was the worst part of the car

      • rover10

They didn’t get those right either. Look how Hyundai, Ford, Audi, Mercedes and Kia got it right. It can be done!

There definitely is demand, look at the Golf 3 door, Kia ProCeed, from what I can recall they are the only 2 3 door hatchbacks that are on sale currently. My point is build a decent one and it will sell, simple 🤷‍♂️

    • Miknik

There is IMO a Seat Leon SC (not in every market anymore though) as well, but the Kia doesn’t seem to have made it to the third generation, so I guess it’s dead as well. Given the Polo 3 door died as well, chances for a 3 door Golf Mk. 8 are likely slim a s well…

The GTC is one of the few recent Vauxhall products that didn’t make me want to poke my eyes out. It was also the last Vauxhall, other than the Adam (sort of) to offer anything approaching glamour to prospective customers. Their current range is a little too rational and lacking anything to appeal to increasingly style-conscious mainstream customers, which probably explains why their sales have fallen off a cliff, at least in the UK.

  • Miknik

I honestly didn’t know that the GTC is still around.

but it’s a shame to drop the Zafira, which sold very well and, after all invented the whole 7 seat mini MPV segment, incl. the trickery rear seats.. The only innovative Opel/Vauxhall car I can think of for a very long time….

  • Vassilis

That’s a shame. I used to own the Astra H GTC and in the right spec it was a better car than the Golf V. Prettier, very good quality, nice high-capacity engines and cheaper. The Zafira as well was a great car.

Sad,,, I planned to buy a Zafira next year. So I have to switch again to Touran. No, I don’t like SUV, so Grandland is no alternative.
