It’s not very often that a crashed exotic sells at one of Monterey Car Week’s exclusive auctions, bug it happened last weekend.

Mecum Auctions brought along a crashed 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort to the event and expected it to sell for between $450,000 and $550,000. While that estimate fell short of the eventual $467,000 sale price, seeing a severely damaged 959 selling for nearly half a million is very interesting.

The car sustained its serious damage when the trailer it was being transported in slipped off its hitch and slammed directly into a tree. This caused carnage at the supercar’s front end, smashing the bumper, grille and hood, while also ripping the front passenger wheel clean off. Remarkably, the car still moves under its power, as long as a dolly wheel is placed up front.

It is unknown why the previous owner didn’t elect to repair the car after the crash and instead opted to sell it in its sorry state. Whatever the reason, the car’s little adventure into a tree would have cost the owner at least half a million dollars, as 959 Komforts have sold for in excess of $1 million in recent times.

Making the Porsche 959 Komfort so desirable is the fact that just 294 examples were ever built. What’s more, this particular car had driven just 3657 miles (5885 km) when it crashed and because the engine is in the rear, the new owner won’t have worry about fixing the most expensive part of the car.

That being said, returning the car to its original condition won’t be cheap, but the buyer a. surely isn’t short on cash, and b. most likely thinks it’s a worthwhile investment.
