In a surprising move, Volkswagen has just announced the launch of the Teramont in the Middle East.

The SUV, which is known as the Atlas in North America, comes straight from the Asian markets, where it broke cover nearly two years ago.

However, unlike the Chinese versions, the one destined for the Middle East will be assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside the US-spec Passat.

“Welcoming the Teramont to our market is a delight, as we are confident this car will be perfect for this location”, commented the brand’s Middle East Director, Andrew Savvas. “Size matters, especially for families in this region and this is exactly what we offer now.”

Inside its 5,037 mm (198.3 in) long, 1,979 mm (77.9 in) wide and 1,768 mm (69.6 in) tall body, the Teramont can accommodate up to seven occupants. Depending on how many seats are being used, the boot volume ranges between 583 to 2,741 liters (20.6 – 96.8 cu-ft).

Volkswagen has yet to fully detail the Teramont for the Middle East, but states that all variants come with the brand’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Also, it’s offered with a selection of driving assistance systems, such as Automatic Distance Control, Emergency Brake Assistant, Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection and Park Assist.

Currently, the Volkswagen Atlas is powered either by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, making 238 PS (235 hp / 175 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, or a 3.6-liter V6 rated at 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW) and 361 Nm (266 lb-ft) of torque. However, it remains to be seen whether the Teramont will use those same units for the Middle East.
