Hyundai appears to be working on a lightweight version of the i30 N and has been spied testing the vehicle near the Nurburgring.

The following i30 N prototype is covered head-to-toe in camouflage but it does feature a number of parts you won’t find on the ‘regular’ i30 N. For example, there are new lightweight wheels with a simple spoke design and a grey finish. Additionally, a new chin spoiler has been added to the front bumper and bespoke side skirts have been fitted.

The obvious styling alterations are then completed with a different rear bumper and rear diffuser than the standard i30 N.

Hyundai N boss Albert Biermann has indicated that a special edition version of the i30 N is indeed in the works, suggesting that it will be lighter than the standard model and also include a carbon fiber hood. It is possible that the prototype in question  features lightweight racing bucket seats, but it is hard to be sure from the images.

Our sources claim that the lightened Hyundai i30 N won’t have any more power than the ‘standard’ model. Having driven that car comprehensively, we can say that power certainly isn’t something which it is lacking. Let’s not forget, the hot hatch is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 271 hp and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) in ‘Performance’ guise funneled exclusively through the front wheels.

For customers who want more power, however, it seems likely the company will soon have a solution. Hyundai has been openly testing an all-wheel drive layout for the hot hatch and could increase power in this model. In addition, a dual-clutch variant of the i30 N will soon be released.

The i30 N was a huge success for the Hyundai brand and we can’t wait to see what it has up its sleeves for the future.
