2021 Hyundai Tucson Sheds Camo To Reveal Dramatic Front End Design

A few days ago we brought you spy shots of the next-generation Hyundai Tucson wrapped in rather heavy camouflage.

However, our photographers were lucky to spot a 2021 Tucson prototype once again, this time with a less disguised front fascia. Whereas in the first set of photos the compact SUV wore a black cloth over most of the front end, now that piece is gone revealing a very interesting design.

As you can see, the headlights adopt a split layout with the main units placed rather low on each side of the “cascading grille”, while the secondary lights are placed higher and are seamlessly integrated with the massive grille. The upper lights somewhat resemble those of the Mercedes-Benz EQC, whereas the front end as a whole reminds of the Hyundai Nexo fuel-cell SUV.

The front bumper looks sharp and features a sizable opening under the grille, with the only other noticeable design detail being the aero-style wheels. The rest of the car continues to feature thick camouflage and body cladding, especially at the rear. It’s anyone’s guess if the changes at the back will be equally radical as those at the front.

As with all new models, the upcoming Tucson is expected to grow in size, up to the point of offering a seven-seat option in some markets — rumor has it that the Indian market will get a three-row version.

The next-generation Hyundai Tucson will share a platform with the upcoming Santa Cruz pickup, which means the two models should feature similar engines. Expect a 2.5-liter Theta3 engine in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms in North America, complete with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As for Europe, 1.6 GDI and 1.6-liter T-GDI gasoline engines are more likely, joined by an unspecified diesel and possibly the new 2.0-liter GDI HEV hybrid engine from the Sonata. Both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations will be available.
