This Is The New 2020 Land Rover Defender Straight From The Set Of James Bond

An image of the 2020 Land Rover Defender has surfaced online showing the all-new off-roader free of any camouflage.

This photo was allegedly snapped on the film set of the latest James Bond film where the all-new Defender is set to star. It reveals that the vehicle looks drastically different than the previous-generation Defender and has a design more reflective of current Range Rover models.

The front of the 2020 Defender pictured incorporates angled square headlights and a number of small horizontal grilles and air intakes. While it is hard to get a sense of scale of the new Defender from this single image, the front certainly looks lower and narrower than the old model but that could just be our eyes playing tricks on us.

Looking beyond the front of the new Defender you will notice small wing mirrors and a boxy roofline like the old car. There are also flared wheel arches and what looks to be an impressive amount of ground clearance.

Land Rover has released dozens of photos of the new Defender undergoing tests around the world in recent weeks ahead of the vehicle’s global debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month.

Leaked specifications of the new off-roader have confirmed that it will be sold in 90, 110, and 130 configurations. The mid-size Defender 110 will be the first variant to hit the market. Engine options available will include three diesels consisting of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 197 hp, a more powerful 2.0-liter with 237 hp, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel developing 296 hp. There will also be three petrol models available, namely a 296 hp 2.0-liter, a 398 hp plug-in hybrid, and a 395 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder.

I’m not going to get in trouble for this — because it’s all over #facebook at the moment! Here is what looks like the first uncovered #defender2020 — straight (apparently) from the film set of the new #bond movie! Makes sense! A few things come to mind. Firstly, the winch is excellent. Secondly, the alpine windows are still there! Thirdly, the rear passenger door looks massive — you’ll never open that in a Tesco car park! Fourthly, there seems to be quite a bit of wheel clearance (though it’s unknown if this is standard height, off road height, or on coils!). Fifthly, checker on the bonnet (yes, the bonnet is a funny shape and there is no real wing to speak of). Sixthly, I’m not sure about the mirrors at all. Seventhly…. well, this could clearly go on a bit! #landroverdefender #allnewdefender #landroverdefender #landrover #thebest4x4xfar #landrovertheworldover #landroverworld #bignews #didntmakefrankfurt #someonesheadwillrollforthis #spyshot #spyfilm #jamesbondfilmset #allnewdefender2020 #newdefender #newdefendernews #newlandroverdefender #defender #landroverdefender #landroverdefender110 #defender110

They should had aborted it, because it’s dead on arrival. I could be speaking too soon, but front the picture it pales in comparison to the original icon. It looks generic.

    • Bash

      I can’t agree more.

  • Six_Tymes

I am pleasantly surprised (so far). I hope this isn’t just a movie version, and it is a production version. Because, those fenders look spot on, so does the front grille and light cluster/s

  • Hi I am Zako

Oh no 🙁 was expecting something more masculine from the Lego leak

    Rugged Ford Flex

    • Bo Hanan

Not sure who’s copying who. Ford SUV’s look like RR’s or RRs look like Ford SUV’s.

  • bd0007

Loved the Defender (way better and more iconic than the Range Rover in terms of design),

But this (at least the front clip) is just horrible.

Looks more like an updated (and slightly more rugged) Honda Element; the Soul has a more aggressive looking front fascia.

    • donald seymour

    • Raider Linc

No character on the front, looks like crap. Like they were half asleep when they designed the grill, pathetic. I’m so pissed off because I thought this would be my next car!

  • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

Great stance, unless this car has been modified for the film. However, considering this is the first time a new generation model has been launched in decades, I kinda expected more? It’s a very safe and expected design but , It is unmistakably a Land Rover so I’m not sure how anyone could say it’s generic. I still don’t trust Land Rovers reliability wise though.

  • Some ol’ bloke

I think thay’ve done a good job on that – dislike all you want but I would have one…

  • I like it! Now let’s wait for the interior shots

  • surfshop

    looks like a Discovery…

  • Owen Hamilton

As Villanelle would say, “this is so boooooring”. The old one looked better in my opinion.

  • Jason Panamera

The icon of Defender was in the same, narrow league with G-Class and Wrangler but with this new gen it seems like Land Rover has managed to utilize Defender’s heritage.

  • Shtekeris

People should keep in mind that this is black out version to look sinister in the movie, the real thing will probably have more small details, chrome elements and stuff, will make the face look slightly better/interesting.

  • Finkployd

Not bad but they lost the iconic timeless look the second they ditched the round headlights. Might as well be the new discovery

Looks more like old Pajero, than Defender…. Where all claddings?….
Now its competitor off the Explorer, not Wrangler or G-Class

    • donald seymour

      Ouch! The truth hurts.

My sugestion to Landrover is buy a licence form Suzuki and build 4 door Jimny aka Defender it wil look better than this….

    • nah, LR needs to learn a lesson.

Let toyota badge it as the new FJ!

You see what you want to see, an old bar has more resemblance than this thing…

  • alex.remsen

they should hurry up and unveil it already since this is exactly how the Bronco will look like

    • ZYGIUS

I realized just now why LR and Ford ovals are indentical. You can easily rip off LR badge and stick Fords if you want 😀

  • Frase

Oh my god, they’ve just ripped off the GLB and the freaking Honda Element! They’ve just taken one of the most recognisable faces in motoring and made it a dull, creatively bankrupt version. I was sort of expecting this though.

  • iddqd

modern interpretation- nothing bad with this.

    • ZYGIUS

Say it to MB with new G-Class

      • iddqd

the G-Class is a hedonistic POS for posers with no taste but too much money…Mercedes can’t care less about safety ratings or fuel economy for this particular model, because the profit margins are out of this world and the potential clientele barely measurable.

        • Todun Olusola

but your comment was nonsense wasn’t it because clearly you can, can’t you.

        • Rimas Kurtinaitis

The G-Klasse got 5 stars in Euro NCAP.
The G-Klasse has an enormous clientele – with enormous wallets.
The G-Klasse has absolutely fantastic looks on the outside.

This “Defender” is Britain’s own H3.
JLR could’ve made it better. But they didn’t.

    • Raider Linc

Sounds like BS to me, the G-Wagon is a box. Where did you get this BS knowledge from?

  • Elpatore

I actually really like it. I did not expect to like it but i do, and If it is truly good off-road it will be one of the few “cool” cars on sale.

  • FordMopar

Somebody needs to accidentally reveal the GD Bronco!!!! Come on!

  • ErnieB

Not an ugly SUV, but no where near as cool and iconic as the old defender. It’s a shame they didn’t just do what Mercedes did with the G-class and Jeep with the wrangler.. just slightly evolve the thing.

  • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

Nothing about this design carries the iconic image of the original. This is a major disappointment.

  • Todun Olusola

What have they done to it. 😔

  • ok, not bad looking, just kind of underwhelming i guess.

especially with the Wrangler and G wagon redesigns managing to keep the rough and tumble chops of their predicesors. this seems kind of soft… like the H3 was to the battle hardened war vet of the Humvee.

  • Subi-Rubicon1

Soccer moms and posers rejoice, another Land Rover to accessorize to the max to be left sitting at your local shopping center parking lot!

    • Nastinupe1911

Couldn’t even take a pic of your Rubi off road hunh. Looks like it’s in a parking lot…

      • Subi-Rubicon1

LOL, that’s the dealer’s parking lot when it was purchased. Good eye though that picture should be update 🙂

  • wait a minute

looks wise not as cool as the old defender, but that thing was not suitable as a daily driver, you could even use a mobile telephone without slowing down, also expensive to maintain. My local mechanic who specializes in servicing land rover defenders recommended the wrangler over the defender he said it may by durable but that does mean reliable. But at least this new model could make it an alternative to a jeep wrangler- lets see.

    • uS’gedlemba

You know there’s something called a Land Cruiser?

  • botornot387

    love the way this looks!

  • Aeromann

    But James Bond is dead…

  • dumblikeyou2

Looks like a Chinese knock off

  • sidewaysspin

Will this save Jaguar-Land Rover? I doubt it.

  • Hot Twink

The Alpine roof windows are also kept, which are associated with the original Defender.

  • FunctionForm

All the naysayers. I’ll take two.

  • Mynameis Taylor

i love the way it looks 🙂

  • MarketAndChurch

Not a fan. People want a retro, rugged, and sometimes, tactical look. This aint it.

  • Richard Taylor

Think it looks pretty good, even in this snapshot and in all-black. Keen to see some official photos of the different models and with a bunch of off-road accessories.

  • surfshop

Don’t worry, in 10 years time they will release a real “retro” defender and make it look like it should.

  • Raider Linc

I just have to reiterate, this is the ugliest car LR has ever made. I’ll have to take care of my LR4 for a few years I guess, I’m not buying this ugly sh*t!

  • Raider Linc
