Musk Says Tesla Pickup Will Be Like A Futuristic “Armored Personnel Carrier”

Elon Musk has teased Tesla’s upcoming all-electric pickup truck once again, revealing that it will be akin to an “armored personnel carrier.”

The automaker even released an intriguing teaser image of the pickup a little while back, prompting enthusiasts around the world to try and imagine what the vehicle will look like. Asked on Twitter if the truck will resemble any of these renderings, Musk gave a firm ‘no’.

“Cybertruck doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen bouncing around the Internet. It’s closer to an armored personnel carrier from the future,” he responded.

That’s a curious statement to make as it suggests that Tesla won’t target the likes of Rivian, Ford, and General Motors with its upcoming pickup truck and may instead try to carve out its own niche in the market.

Tesla has previously suggested its pickup will handle just as well as a Porsche 911 (unlikely…), provide seating for six passengers, have upwards of 300,000 lbs (136,077 kg) of towing capacity, and more than 400-500 miles (645 – 800 km) of range.

Talking about the Tesla pickup earlier this year, Musk said “I’m personally super-excited by this pickup truck. It’s something I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. And I’ve been iterating sort of designs with Franz… It’s like I really wanted something that’s like super-futuristic cyberpunk. If there’s only a small number of people that like that truck, I guess we’ll make a more conventional truck in the future. But it’s the thing that I am personally most fired up about. It’s gonna have a lot of titanium,” he said.

The vehicle will be unveiled in November.

That’s a straw man argument. He definitely has left plenty of promises on the side of the road, but there is no denying the S, X, 3, and soon to be Y were/are as promised. If he follows through on the truck, it will no doubt be a game changer. Aero is super important for a EV range, so I suspect something weird, but strangely cool.

Exactly. Thank you. Love to see rational people contributing here. And bang on on your assessment of design. Suspect the rear bed has a cover, essentially. The vehicle’s hwy configuration is probably low, but with a high-riding config for off-roading. Smooth external design, innovation on the inside with a clean interior, but with more functionality for lifestyle activities. And, I am seriously hoping there’s a water jet for boating. Something designed for serious off-roading should be water-tight. Something water-tight and electric should be able to float. Something that can float can be powered. We shouldn’t have to buy a boat to go lake or river fishing. Just a Tesla.

  • i still think it’s gonna be a Y with the back chopped off.

but this sounds like a GM dustbuster…

I think similarly, a Tesla Semi w/o the high roof and the second driving axle.

Because I really need an armored personnel carrier to haul mulch into my subdivision

It will LOOK like an APC, not BE one…

What’s the point of that though to get poor visibility? I don’t see many Tesla buyers that obsessed with fetishizing the military. A good utilitarian look, if it’s functional, is great in a truck (see frontier, 4 runner, wrangler, etc) but I fear this will end up looking like many Wranglers with all the tacticool mods that never go on a dirt road.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. This dude is putting expensive titanium into his pickup trucks but building the skin of his latest rocket with 302 stainless steel (Saturn V used Al in the 1960’s)? When will everyone realize they’re being f***ed with?
I gave him the benefit of the doubt for years, but it’s now clear he’s just a “private” government clown.
