Sigh Of Relief: 2020 BMW 5-Series Grille Not Growing In Size

BMW is getting ready to come out with an updated (called LCI in Bavaria) version of the current G30 5-Series and until recently, there was a fear that it might give it those bigger grilles that so many people seem to dislike as far as the 7-Series LCI or the new M3 are concerned.

So if you don’t like your BMW grinning at you as wide as possible, you can rest easy as this latest batch of spy images reveals a new grille design that doesn’t appear to have changed in size – at least not noticeably.

The shape is different, with less angular edges, though the thinner headlights might make the kidney grilles seem a hair more pronounced. Overall, BMW seems to want a more imposing front end for its Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6 rival, but we need the camouflage to come off completely before grading their efforts in any way.

Current 2019 BMW 5-Series Sedan and Touring

Also new is the bumper design, both front and rear, while the taillights appear to be a bit thinner too, which is probably for the best – at least on Touring models such as this one.

We have already managed to see inside an updated 2020 5-Series prototype and we know that it’s equipped with a wider 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, to go with a slightly larger infotainment display, plus new control buttons on the steering wheel.

As for the engine range, BMW is expected to add a particulate filter to its gasoline units, while also launching additional electrified 5ers. One rumor even talks about a more powerful 388 HP six-cylinder PHEV model that could fit above the current 530e.

The updated 5-Series should break cover by early next year and go on sale shortly after.
