Volkswagen used last year’s Christmas card to tease the ID. Buggy and the company is at it once again as this year’s card teases another upcoming model.

As you can see, the image depicts Santa driving what appears to be a new ID hatchback. Details are hard to make out, but the vehicle has a long windscreen which flows into a relatively flat roof. Out back, we can see an LED light bar and a rounded fascia.

While last year’s card previewed a concept, Autocar says this card previews an entry-level electric vehicle codenamed the ID Entry. The hatchback will reportedly be previewed by a concept next year and go into production in 2022.

In order to keep prices down, the ID Entry will reportedly ride on a “more cost-effective version” of the MEB platform. The cost cutting should also extend to the battery pack as it’s expected to be small and only deliver a range of between 130-150 miles (209-241 km).

That isn’t very impressive, but Volkswagen’s chief operating officer told the publication the ID Entry is a “small car that people will use for shorter distances.” Ralf Brandstätter also defended the relatively short range by pointing out the average commute is less than 15.5 miles (25 km). He went on to say the upcoming model will likely be a family’s “second or third car,” so a long range isn’t necessarily important.

Little else is known about the hatchback at this point, but it will reportedly measure around 149.6 inches (3,800 mm) long which would make it smaller than the Polo. Despite its small size, the packaging benefits of being an EV would reportedly enable it to have interior dimensions similar to the 2020 Golf Mk8.
