Volkswagen has confirmed that it is working on a new SUV that will slot below the current Tiguan in the brand’s family of North American models and set to arrive in 2021.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about such a model. In October, Volkswagen Group of America chief executive Scott Keogh told The Detroit Bureau that there are in fact two sub-Tiguan models being readied for the U.S. market. During a recent media event in Michigan this week, the company offered some more details about one of these two new SUVs.

According to Motor 1, the small SUV in question will be produced in Mexico and has been designed specifically for the North American market. The report added that the vehicle will reach the U.S. market in the summer of 2021. Other than those tidbits of information, we don’t know anything else about the vehicle.

One other SUV from VW that we do know is being readied for a U.S. launch is the all-electric ID.4. It is set to arrive in 2020 and should cost about the same as an equivalent ICE-powered Tiguan, indicating a price tag in the high $30k or low $40k range.

Beyond the car manufacturer’s increased investments in new SUV models for the U.S., it said that it has no plans to alter its line-up of car models.

“While some brands have walked away from car sales, we are focused on making smart decisions in this segment which is still a big part of the market,” VW said in a statement.
