With the new generation Volkswagen Golf GTI getting ready to break cover, Mountune has released a bundle of upgrades for the outgoing model that makes it more powerful than the 300 PS (296 HP / 221 kW) Golf R.

Priced at £1,000 ($1,301) in the United Kingdom, including installation at the company’s headquarters in Hutton, Essex, and for a limited amount of time, it combines the Stage 1 kit with the Mountune52 cat-back exhaust system, in carbon fiber or stainless steel trim.

The result is truly impressive: 310 PS (306 HP / 228 kW) and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft) of torque obtained from the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That’s 88 PS (87 HP / 65 kW) and 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) more than the stock lump and is available for both transmission options: manual and DSG.

With the upgrade up and running, the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration drops from 6.4 to 5.4 seconds. The tuner did not say anything about the top speed of the front-wheel drive hot hatch, so it has likely remained electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Meanwhile, if you feel like the Golf GTI Mk7 is outdated, you could wait for the Mk8 to be unveiled. Reports indicate that it should be presented shortly and if the numbers are correct, then it will unleash 245 PS (241 HP / 180 kW). The Golf GTI TCR is expected with 300 PS (296 HP / 221 kW) , while the range-topping four-wheel drive Golf R is tipped to get 333 PS (328 HP / 245 kW). The diesel GTD and plug-in hybrid GTE will probably bring 201 PS (197 HP / 147 kW) and 245 PS (241 HP / 180 kW), respectively.
