Not long after the new 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S was unveiled, our spy photographers have snapped a prototype undergoing winter testing with an intriguing ducktail spoiler at the rear.

While it would be easy to jump to the conclusion that Porsche is already working on a limited-run variant of the Turbo S with some retro styling, we don’t believe that to be the case. Instead, it is thought that the ducktail spoiler of this prototype could be part of a ‘Heritage Design Package’ that could soon become an option for the sports car.

This 911 prototype doesn’t appear to have undergone any other modifications aside from the rear spoiler. Weirdly, you’ll notice that the side air intakes directly behind the doors have been blocked off.

The ducktail spoiler has a long and rich history at Porsche and was first used by the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 back in 1973. More recently, the ducktail became available through the Sport Design Aerokit for the 991-generation model. Not only does it add an intriguing retro look to the 911 but also adds some downforce to stick the rear wheels to the pavement.

If Porsche is indeed set to offer the ducktail spoiler on the 992, it will likely be available for both the 911 Turbo and Turbo S, although the former of those two has yet to be unveiled. In the wake of the canceled Geneva Motor Show, the 2021 911 Turbo S was showcased with a familiar look and a new 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine delivering 641 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
