The unveiling of the Giulia GTA and Giulia GTAm editions last month has made some wonder whether Alfa Romeo will apply the same treatment to the Stelvio, too. After all, the Italian brand’s first SUV can be had in the super-hot Quadrifoglio version.

The answer to this question is ‘no’. This is what Autocar learned after speaking to the company’s product marketing chief, Fabio Migliavacca, who said that the DNA of the GTA moniker does not match to other cars in their product lineup.

“The GTA is an important name for Alfa Romeo. Frankly speaking, we had a meeting on a Stelvio GTA, but it’s just not in line with customer expectations”, he explained. “It has to be the best possible [on the track]. On the Stelvio, we have a higher center of gravity [compared to the Giulia], so it won’t achieve the same goals.”

Inspired by the original Giulia GTA from 1965 and launched to celebrate Alfa Romeo’s 110th birthday, the new Giulia GTA will be limited to 500 units. Despite the coronavirus pandemic that has hit the world, the automaker revealed that more than 500 customers are interested in the car and want to purchase it, although the order books have yet to open.

Full specs of the two cars will be announced in due course, but they will eclipse the standard 510 PS (503 HP / 375 kW) Giulia Quadrifoglio, which does the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and tops out at 305 km/h (190 mph). The two GTAs have had the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 juiced up to produce 540 PS (532 HP / 397 kW). They also feature revised aerodynamics and weight savings, with a clear goal in mind: quicker lap times.
