Swindon Powertrain has started accepting orders for their new High Power Density (HPD) EV system in the United Kingdom, with deliveries set to commence in August.

Priced at £6,400 (equal to $7,867), excluding tax, the ‘crate’ includes a 107 HP (109 PS / 80 kW) and 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) of torque electric motor, transmission, differential and 3.3 feet (1 meter) of cabling. More money can be spent on options such as the limited slip differentials, cooling and inverters.

According to the company, the size of the package is 17.4×15.1×9 inches (441x384x228 mm) and weighs 110 lbs (49.9 kg), which makes it “the highest power/volume unit for automotive applications on sale”. It features several installation points, can be waterproofed and targets small volume car manufacturers as well as petrolheads who want to convert their rides to run on electricity and, until now, had to scavenge parts from scrapped electric cars.

“It’s now easier than ever for anyone to convert a car, truck or even quad bike to electric. HPD is a new, properly engineered system with a years’ warranty”, said MD Raphael Caille. “Despite the challenges the world faces, it’s a credit to the skills and resourcefulness of the engineers and suppliers in the UK automotive and motorsport industry that deliveries will start this August, just one month later than we originally stated.”

Swindon claims that they registered more than 400 requests for more information on their product in the first weeks after announcing it last fall. They have also taken pre-orders from different OEMs that are committed to future research and development projects, including one for a hybrid e-axle application.
