Whether you’re riding a motorcycle or driving a car, a twisty mountain road is always a pleasure, especially when the traffic is light.

Of course, that doesn’t mean one should treat roads like these as if they were racetracks, as they are far more dangerous than closed circuits. Two bikers were very close to finding out just how dangerous a public road can be as they were having way more fun than they were supposed to on a challenging canyon road.

Judging by how fast they were riding, you’d think they mistook the California road for, say, the Isle of Man TT Mountain Course. The footage uploaded on YouTube by the Yamaha YZF-R6 rider shows him and his Suzuki SFV650-riding friend hitting speeds of up to 90 mph (145 km/h).

Remember, we’re talking about a two-lane undivided highway where the speed limit is typically 55 mph (88 km/h). While ignoring the speed limit isn’t exactly wise, the fact that they failed to notice repeated traffic signs warning of road works ahead is even more startling. When they eventually reached the bottleneck, the leading biker suddenly braked very hard, leaving his mate behind him no option but to run into him.

Fortunately for the Yamaha rider, he had the presence of mind to bypass his friend and the stationary cars by quickly steering right and going off the road. It was the only way to get out of very big trouble as braking was not an option at that speed and with so little space available.

Needless to say, he should not have had to make this dangerous maneuver if he had obeyed the speed limits and/or had noticed the traffic signs in the first place.
