It’s been more than a year since its record-breaking drive up Tianmen Mountain in China, so naturally VW is looking for new challenges for its ID.R electric race car.

Thus, the ID.R will take participate in the Goodwood SpeedWeek (16-18 Oct), a three-day festival that will take place behind closed doors. Since SpeedWeek won’t be held on the Goodwood Hill, the ID.R will attempt to conquer the 3.8 km (2.36 mile) long Goodwood Motor Circuit instead.

As far as the FoS is concerned, the ID.R has been victorious there for the past two years, so it’s no wonder VW feels confident enough to challenge a lap record that dates back to 1965.

That record belongs to F1 drivers Jim CLark and Jackie Stewart, who both set times of 1:20.4 minutes during an unofficial Formula 1 race. Should the ID.R top that during SpeedWeek, it would become the first car to hold records on both Goodwood tracks (Hill and Motor Circuit).

“For decades, Goodwood has been a real attraction for motorsport enthusiasts all over the world, and we are delighted that the organizers have launched SpeedWeek in these very challenging times,” VW Motorsport exec Sven Smeets said. “As one of the few automobile events to take place this year, SpeedWeek offers extensive coverage. This way, we can once again demonstrate the fantastic development of electromobility at Volkswagen to an audience of millions, even if it can unfortunately only be on TV and via livestream this time.”

The ID.R currently holds a total of four records across three continents, as well as the lap record for electric cars on the Nurburgring in Germany.
