2020 has been a rollercoaster and no brand understands that better than Lincoln.

The year started out rather promising as Lincoln confirmed plans for an all-new electric vehicle which would be based on Rivian’s skateboard platform.

Lincoln didn’t say much about the model, but it was expected to be launched in 2022 and heavily influenced by Rivian’s R1S. As a result, the SUV likely would have blended traditional Lincoln styling with a four motor powertrain that could have produced up to 754 hp (562 kW / 764 PS) and 825 lb-ft (1,120 Nm) of torque.

However, less than three months later, the project was killed due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the time, Lincoln cited the “current environment” as a reason not to pursue the Rivian-based model and promised their “future plans will include an all-electric vehicle consistent with its Quiet Flight DNA.”

Fast forward to today and Ford CEO Jim Farley has reiterated the company’s commitment to electric Lincolns. As he noted during the automaker’s third quarter earnings announcement, electric vehicles are “fundamental” to Ford’s future and the “Lincoln line.”

This suggests Lincoln is working on an assortment of electric vehicles despite the death of the Rivian-based model. The company didn’t go into specifics, but previous reports have suggested the brand is gearing up to launch a handful of EVs including a compact and mid-sized crossover.

Before the pandemic, the compact crossover was slated to arrive in late 2021 or early 2022. Little is known about it, but speculation suggests it could be a Lincolnified version of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. If that’s the case, we can expect unique styling inside and out as well as powertrains sourced from higher-end versions of the Mach-E.

Less is known about the mid-sized crossover, but it was penciled in for 2023. Of course, plans could have changed and we wouldn’t be surprised if Lincoln receives at least one of the five electric vehicles that will be built at the Oakville assembly plant starting in 2025.
