Nissan will start offering its Safety Shield 360 suite of active safety gear as standard on 10 of its U.S. models come next year.

Currently, Safety Shield 360 is only offered as standard on the Sentra, LEAF, Maxima, Kicks, Rogue Sport and Titan pickup. In 2021, it will also be standard on the 2021 Rogue, plus three additional models that will be announced in the coming months.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cars fitted with some type of forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking experience a 56% reduction in crashes involving injuries. Meanwhile, back-up crashes went down by a massive 78% in cars equipped with Rear Automatic Braking, and by 22% for those fitted with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

There are six advanced safety systems embedded within Nissan Safety Shield 360. First there’s Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, which uses the forward-facing radar and camera to track both vehicles and pedestrians, and will notify you with audible and visual warnings. Worst case, the car will apply the brakes in order to help you avoid or reduce the severity of a frontal crash.

The Lane Departure Warning does pretty much what its name says, the High Beam Assist switches between low and high beams when appropriate, the Blind Spot Warning is, again, self-explanatory, while Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns you about approaching vehicles while you’re reversing out of a parking spot.

Last, but not least, there’s Rear Automatic Braking, which can detect stationary objects when you’re backing up and will apply the brakes if necessary.
