Maserati is poised to usher in a new generation of GranTurismo and GranCabrio models as it begins testing a suspiciously familiar-looking mule. What looks to casual onlookers as a rather butchered Guilia is, in fact, a disguised testbed for the latest sports tourer from Maserati.

The most obvious sign that all is not as it seems is the somewhat elongated nose, the length of which is far more suited to a cab-backward GT. Other tell-tale signs that this is an early test mule are the bulbous arches that fail to hide the widened track.

More evidence that the prototype is from the house of Maserati is found on the rear number-plate, with a not-subtle-at-all trident next to the registration. Finally, the windscreen sticker displays M189, an internal code for the next Grand Tourer from the Italian sports car brand.

While the final body style is still being kept under wraps (as with the Maserati Levente-bodied Ferrari Purosangue SUV mule), we can get some idea of Maserati’s design direction from the Alfieri concept previewed earlier. The long bonnet and wide track of this mule are in line with the expected design language. Meanwhile, the interior is pure Guilia, giving nothing away.

The new GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be available in both petrol and EV flavors. The ICE version is rumored to be inheriting the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 found in the MC20. While delivering 630 hp (639 PS) in that application, expect the more laid-back GT to have a detuned version.

The EV variant of the GranTurismo will also be launched in due course. It’ll feature Maserati’s “Folgore” drivetrain. Italian for “lightning,” the new Folgore EV models will feature a tri-motor set-up, with two motors at the back and one out front, making it an AWD. We also expect the same electric drivetrain not only to be more powerful than the petrol versions but to find its way into the top-flight MC-20 as well.
