After a tepid 2020, 2021 has started in a very good way for Volvo as in the first month of the year the Swedish brand’s sales rose by 30.2 percent compared to January 2020.

Although Volvo’s sales were not particularly strong a year ago (down by 9 percent compared to 2019), this doesn’t diminish its success last month, when it shifted 59,588 vehicles, recording the best January in its history.

This result came thanks to strong sales in all of its major markets, but mostly in China, where deliveries nearly doubled as the country recovered from last year’s COVID-19 shutdowns. As the marque’s biggest market, China’s increase will be a relief to the brand’s accountants. Additionally, Volvo sales also rose in both Europe (9%) and the U.S. (32%).

Last month, 23% of all Volvos sold were Recharge models. The strength of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle sales will, then, be a positive sign for Volvo. It’s also twice as many electrified vehicles as the brand managed to sell in the same month last year.

Volvo reports that SUVs have made up 71% of its sales. Its best seller was the XC40, with 17,770 units, followed by the XC60 (17,053 units) and the XC90 (7,564 units).
