Porsche is developing an innovative system that will compose music as you drive.

The system is known as ‘Soundtrack My Life’ and has been developed by Product Owner at Porsche Digital Norman Friedenberger. It works by piecing together bits of music created by German film composer Borish Salchow as you drive along using an algorithm that matches your driving.

Drivers will simply need to first select a basic musical mood that they enjoy and Soundtrack My Life will compose the music and will use various parameters to measure your driving and match the music to it. If you’re driving in a slow and calm manner, the music will be softer whereas if you’re driving in a sporty manner, it could become more up-tempo.

Porsche has developed a prototype of Soundtrack My Life with a smartphone application and it is still being decided if the system will run through the app or be incorporated into the infotainment systems of future Porsche models. The German automaker also plans to work with a host of different artists to create soundtracks to suit different situations, scenery, and moments. In the future, the technology could become so advanced that it can detect the driver’s mood and tailor music to it.

“You could listen to someone who’s on the road in New York or Tokyo right now,” Salchow said. “The catalogue of ideas and visions of where the journey might go are endless. The breakthrough would be when humans are no longer involved at all. The technology would then not only combine pre-composed set pieces, but also come up with the melodies and look after the phrasing, based on the artist’s musical signature.”

Porsche hasn’t said when the system could be used by its production cars.
