Prices for used cars have been increasing at a staggering rate and they jumped 10% in April to set the highest monthly increase on record.

That’s bad news for buyers as finding a relatively recent, low mileage example in good condition for less than $10,000 (£7,205 / €8,386) is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack.

In Metro Detroit, that’s pretty clear when searching for a 2011 or newer vehicle with less than 100,000 miles (160,934 km) on the odometer. A quick search on Autotrader reveals 278 results and most of them are pretty dreadful.

However, there’s a bit of variety including a handful of cheap EVs. In particular, you can pick up a 2014 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive with only 32,037 miles (51,559 km) for $8,499 (£6,123 / €7,127). That being said, the 68 mile (109 km) range will give you permanent anxiety.

Given the Smart’s limitations, this 40,437 mile (65,077 km) 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV seems like a better bet for $9,700 (£6,986 / €8,131). While it’s a bit more expensive, it’s far more practical and has 82 miles (132 km) of range. That’s still not great, but it’s a 20% improvement over the ForTwo.

If you’re into crossovers and SUVs, your choices are far more limited as there were just 39 results in our search. Putting aside the Compass’, Patriots and Journeys, there are a handful of okay options in the form of the previous-generation Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape. While they’re not terribly exciting, they’re spacious and a 2011 Equinox with all-wheel drive and 74,128 miles (119,297 km) can be had for $9,995 (£7,200 / €8,380).

Saving the best for last, there are a few coupes and convertibles. While most are Smarts and Fiat 500s, one of the more interesting options is a 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse. It has 80,370 miles (129,343 km) on it and is going for $9,998.

Before you get to excited, it features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that develops a modest 162 hp (121 kW / 164 PS) and 162 lb-ft (220 Nm) of torque. It’s paired to a four-speed automatic and is clearly more show than go.
