Rolls-Royce says it would like to launch a new coachbuilt model akin to the Boat Tail every two years.

The Boat Tail is the result of four years of work and will be capped at just three examples, each priced at a claimed $28 million, which, if true, would make it the most expensive car in the world. Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Otvös recently revealed that if there is demand for more coachbuilt models, the company will build them.

“Sweptail was a one-off with a particular client and received an unbelievable reception,” Müller-Otvös told Autocar in a recent interview. “We had a lot of inquiries from our clients if they would be picked to join the next Coachbuild project. We did that four years ago and, while doing that, ramped up the department. Our idea is to maybe do one project every second year. Whether it’s three cars or one car will hinge very much on the idea of the clients and also on our appetite for doing it.”

According to Müller-Otvös, customers of the brand’s Coachbuild division are all loyal Rolls-Royce clients and play a significant part in the design and development of the vehicles.

“They are all long-standing Rolls-Royce clients who know the brand very well, and they had the patience to stay with us for the four-year journey,” he said. “They put considerable time into being engaged with the designers and engineers and talking about it. The engineers and designers are reserved for you as a client – so a call over the weekend because you have a new idea will be answered immediately and we’ll say ‘Let’s go’.”

The Coachbuild program has been enabled by the automaker’s Spirit of Luxury architecture, which allows for different sizes of bodywork. While the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is based on the engine and chassis of the Phantom, it features almost 2,000 unique parts.
