We were contacted by a Porsche spokesperson who told us that a new hypercar is not happening for the foreseeable future. More details here. Original story follows below. [Updated]

A successor to the Porsche 918 Spyder could be just around the corner and may be coming to shake-up the hypercar segment.

While recently speaking on his podcast, comedy writer and Porsche enthusiast Spike Feresten suggested that an all-new mid-engined Porsche dubbed the GT1 is in the works.

“I heard a rumor from a source about a new Porsche that right now, if you’d like to, you can put a deposit down on a Porsche GT1,” he said. “The rumor is, they’re going to announce this in August. There is going to be a new Porsche GT1 mid-engined special car that will follow in the footsteps of the Carrera GT and the 918.”

Road & Track notes that Feresten didn’t name his source but claimed to get his information from an insider working at a dealership that has already started taking deposits for the car. However, Feresten acknowledged that his close friend Jerry Seinfeld hadn’t heard about the car, leading him to question the insider.

We know that Porsche will produce a successor to the 918 Spyder, it is just a matter of when. As of 2019, the German automaker revealed that it was pondering a new hypercar, potentially one powered exclusively by next-generation batteries. However, it claimed that such a car probably wouldn’t see the light of day until “2025 or later.”

One possibility is that Porsche may decide to launch a road-going version of the hybrid race car it is developing alongside Penske and Multimatic for the FIA World Endurance Championship and North America’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This vehicle will compete in the LDMh category in 2023 and be based on an LMP2 chassis.
