Volkswagen announced that the owners of ID.3, ID.4, and ID.4 GTX models will gain access to their first over-the-air software update via mobile data transfer.

According to VW CEO, Ralf Brandstätter, improved versions of the software with added functions will follow every twelve weeks for the ID. family.

The first owners to receive an OTA update for their ID.3 will be the members of the “First Movers Club” in July 2021. All ID.3, ID.4, and ID.4 GTX owners will follow before the end of summer.

According to Volkswagen, the ID.Software 2.3 includes “enhanced ID.Light functionalities, optimized surroundings recognition and dynamic main beam control, improved operability and design modifications for the infotainment system, as well as performance and stability improvements”.

VW ID owners will be able to download the update directly to the car’s infotainment using mobile data transfer. Thanks to the design of the MEB platform, it is possible to update up to 35 control units over the air, improving the operation of numerous functions.

Volkswagen wants to become “a software-oriented mobility provider” laying the foundations for its new business model under the Accelerate strategy. In the near future, VW products will be standardized to a greater extent, allowing each customer to customize their vehicle via software updates – as described by Klaus Zellmer, VW’s sales boss, a few months ago. This means each owner will be able to select additional infotainment or driving assistance systems on-demand with a certain fee, as all models independently of trim level will be equipped with the necessary hardware to support those functions.

Being able to control and improve functions of the car via regular updates, makes it possible for the German manufacturer to keep their offerings on par with the competition during each product’s lifecycle whilst better retaining their value. This level of digitalization was achieved thanks to a collaboration between the ID.Digital department and Cariad – VW Group’s software organization
