Dodge’s high-performance models have been a hit with thieves and the company is fighting back with an assortment of new security features.

Starting today, owners of 2021 Challengers and Chargers equipped with supercharged 6.2- and naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8 engines can visit their local Dodge dealership and request a free “flash software upgrade” that includes an Enhanced Security Valet Mode.

As announced earlier this year, the Enhanced Security Valet Mode will limit the car’s output to approximately 2.8 hp (2.1 kW / 2.8 PS) and 22 lb-ft (30 Nm) of torque, unless the driver enters the correct four-digit code into the infotainment system. While it won’t necessarily prevent your car from being stolen, thieves will be making a slow getaway unless they’ve brought a trailer.

Shortly thereafter, Dodge will offer a Key Programming Lockdown feature that is designed to prevent thieves from cloning your key fob while also allowing your keys to work normally. The feature will cost $159, but the company acknowledged there is a downside as it prevents dealerships from making new keys unless you start the process from scratch. The company is aware this can “be a headache down the road” so, when the Key Programming Lockdown is performed, customers will be given the option of having two additional keys made at a discounted rate.

The Key Programming Lockdown is slated to become available in October and will initially be offered for 2020 and 2021 models. However, Dodge expects to support an additional model year every six weeks so the feature will eventually cover all 2015 and later Chargers and Challengers. Dodge also said it will eventually be offered on the Durango.

Last but not least, the 2022 Charger and Challenger will be offered with a new “Intrusion Module.” It features an inclination sensor and can detect interior movement as well as a window being broken. When this occurs, the alarm is activated and will hopefully scare off would-be thieves. The feature will come standard on Scat Pack and SRT Hellcat models, while being offered on SXT, GT and R/T variants as an option.
