Enthusiasts have been waiting for the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS for a number of years and while we didn’t receive the RS in the GT4’s first-generation, the latest 718 GT4 has finally spawned the hardcore, track-focused model.

Porsche has equipped the Cayman GT4 RS with the same 4.0-liter flat-six as the current 911 GT3, albeit detuned to produce 493 hp and 331 lb-ft (449 Nm) of torque and now mounted in the middle, rather than behind the rear axle like its bigger brother. This engine revs through to 9,000 rpm like it does in the GT3 and is coupled exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK with shorter gearing.

The German automaker says the car needs just 3.2 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) and reaches a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h).

Eager to learn more about the ultimate Cayman, Top Gear’s Jack Rix had the opportunity to speak with Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger about the car. Throughout the video, Preuninger explains how the GT4 RS differs from the standard GT4 and how much different it is to drive than the 911 GT3. He also describes it as the little brother to the GT3.

Porsche also spent a considerable amount of time upgrading the aerodynamics of the GT4 RS. As such, it features a large swan-neck rear wing, a carbon fiber hood with NACA ducts, an adjustable front spoiler, a larger rear diffuser, and air louvers over the front quarter panels. As a result, the GT4 RS produces 25 per cent more downforce than the regular GT4.
