Facelifted BMW X5 Spotted With An Aggressive New Bumper

Spy photographers have snapped the facelifted BMW X5 and X5 M on multiple occasions, but now the camouflage is starting to come off.

That’s immediately apparent as an X5 prototype has been spotted with a radical new bumper. It features a revised central intake with angular supports similar to those found on the upcoming 7-Series. They’re flanked by angular intakes and J-shaped air curtains.

While little is known about the new bumper, it could be reserved for M Sport variants. That remains to be seen, but the prototype features traditional M Sport blue calipers and the current M Sport package adds a more aggressive bumper with intakes on both sides of the central opening.

Putting the bumper aside, the facelifted model features slimmer headlights and what appears to be a lightly revised grille. The rest of the model largely carries over, but the taillights seem to have a more three-dimensional appearance.

The changes will continue in the cabin as previous spy photos have shown the crossover will adopt a minimalist shifter, updated switchgear, and iX-inspired displays. The digital instrument cluster will presumably measure 12.3-inches, while the infotainment system should have a 14.9-inch display.

Little is known about powertrain options, but choices could carryover with minor updates for improved performance and increased range on plug-in hybrid variants. Furthermore, BMW has already confirmed plans for a hydrogen-powered model that will be built in limited numbers for demonstration and testing purposes. Known as the iX5 Hydrogen, the crossover will feature two carbon fiber reinforced hydrogen storage tanks as well as an electric motor that develops 369 hp (275 kW / 374 PS).
