The hard shoulder on the freeway is mostly good at one thing: pulling over in an emergency. And yet, people still insist on using it for other purposes, like getting past a driver they feel is driving too slowly.

A recent video posted Reddit shows the consequences of trying to pass on the shoulder while also being an excellent warning against the temptation to hastily make decisions in anger.

The video opens on a GMC Sierra following closely behind what appears to be a Dodge Charger in the left lane. The distance between the vehicles does not seem to be to the leading car’s liking as it then proceeds to brake-check the pickup truck, which, for the record, tends to cause more harm than good.

In this case, the behavior only causes the driver of the Sierra to follow more closely. When that still won’t make the Charger speed up, the GMC driver takes another tack and tries a tricky two-lane passing maneuver.

Attempting to overtake both the Charger and another vehicle in the right lane, the Sierra tries to go around them both by pulling all the way onto the shoulder. Unfortunately, the driver doesn’t look quite far enough down the road and almost immediately runs into a guard rail, clipping the SUV in the right lane in the process.

Joining the ranks of videos showing the consequences of using a part of the road not designed for high speeds in order to perform a daring maneuver, this footage is just the latest to prove that trying too hard to go fast can end up slowing you down considerably.
