If you’ve been close to pulling the trigger on a brand-new Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium or California Route 1, it seems that time has run out. Ford has confirmed that it is no longer accepting orders on either trim level and that dealer inventory is almost gone too. If you still want a built-to-order Mustang Mach-E it will need to be a base or a GT.

There’s no doubt that the Mach-E is a big hit for Ford. In fact, it’s such a smash hit that Ford has revamped production plans, doubled output goals, and still had to pause at times thanks to the chip shortage and other factors. They literally can’t build these all-electric crossovers fast enough and that’s why they’ve halted orders today.

Confirmed on the Ford Mustang Mach-E website, both the California Route 1 and the Premium say “no longer available for order. Extremely limited inventory available at select dealers” when you go to build either. That leaves the Select and the GT trims available for 2022 model year orders.

Ford responded to an inquiry about the change to Car & Driver saying “We have seen unprecedented demand and are focused on building existing customer orders for Premium and California Route 1 Mustang Mach-E models.”

Each bookend of the lineup has its advantages and disadvantages though which explains in some small way why they’re less popular. The Select starts at $43,895 with rear-wheel drive while the GT jumps to $61,995 and comes with the extended range battery and all-wheel drive.

Of course, order either one and you’ll still be waiting for months before your new Mustang Mach-E arrives. The Select is currently featuring a wait time of 20 or more weeks according to Ford. That’s also known as almost five months from the day you place the order till the car arrives.

The GT is even worse at 28 or more weeks so it would be sometime in September of 2022 when your 2022 Mustang Mach-E arrives. That would be around the same time when the 2023 model year starts to ship to customers. What are your thoughts on this latest development surrounding the popular Ford? Are you willing to switch to another model if you’d been looking at the Premium or the California Route 1?
