Subaru has announced the 2023 Solterra will begin at $44,995 before factoring in a $1,225 destination charge and a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Set to arrive at U.S. dealerships this summer, the 2023 Solterra is slightly more expensive than the Toyota bZ4X XLE AWD, which begins at $44,080 and has a cheaper destination charge of $1,215. That’s a difference of $925 and this could make the Solterra a tougher sale as the model is virtually identical to the bZ4X.

However, there are some differences and the entry-level Solterra Premium features a slightly revised exterior with a unique front end. The model also comes equipped with LED headlights, privacy glass, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Moving into the cabin, drivers will find a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment system. The latter features wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay as well as cloud-based navigation, an intelligent assistant, and connected features such as remote access. Other equipment includes heated front seats, an automatic climate control system, and power windows and locks.

On the safety front, buyers will find an assortment of driver assistance systems including Emergency Steering Assist, Intersection Collision Avoidance Support, Pre-Collision Brake Assist, Lane Departure Prevention, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing Assist. They’re joined by a Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Camera Detection with Pedestrian Warning, Safe Exit Assist, and Parking Support Brake which can automatically apply the brakes if a collision is imminent when reversing.

The mid-level Solterra Limited starts at $48,495 and has a more upscale exterior with LED fog lights and larger 20-inch aluminum wheels. The model also features rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, and a power liftgate.

The upgrades continue in the cabin as the Limited boasts StarTex upholstery, heated rear seats, and a 10-way power driver’s seat. Buyers will also find a wireless smartphone charger, a heated steering wheel, HomeLink, and a larger 12.3-inch infotainment system.

Last but not least, the Limited features a 360° Panoramic View Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and an Advanced Park Assist system that aids in parallel and perpendicular parking. The mid-level crossover also has Digital Key technology via the Solterra Connect app.

The range-topping Solterra Touring begins at $51,995 and adds a gloss black hood accent as well as an available contrasting black roof. Other highlights include a panoramic moonroof, a digital rearview mirror, heated / ventilated front seats, and ambient interior lighting.

Regardless of which trim is selected, all Solterras are equipped with a 72.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a combined output of 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 249 lb-ft (337 Nm) of torque. This setup enables Premium variants to have a range of 228 miles (367 km), but that drops to 222 miles (357 km) for the Limited and Touring.
