Hyundai has just announced a recall for over 215,000 vehicles in the United States alongside an additional recall with Kia that impacts 32 vehicles nationwide.

The larger of the two recall impacts 2013-2014 Hyundai Sonata models that were produced between November 26, 2012 and February 7, 2014. The recall comes in response to an earlier one that may not have completely resolved a problem related to a fuel feed line.

A defect report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that under a previous recall, it was revealed that the fuel feed line connecting the low-pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump could be damaged or leak. Vehicles that had fuel feed lines that showed visible damage had them replaced while those without damage were wrapped in heat resistant tape at the connection between the low-pressure fuel tube and fuel pump. As it turns out, this heat-resistant tape may be insufficient in preventing a leak so vehicles with the tape are being recalled.

Hyundai will resolve the issue by installing new fuel feed lines in all impacted vehicles. Both dealers and owners will be notified on July 5 through first-class mail.

As for the second recall, it impacts two Hyundai vehicles and 30 vehicles from Kia. Investigations have revealed that the retention bolt in the u-joint connecting the steering column to the steering rack may have been installed with insufficient torque during vehicle assembly. This could result in the steering column disconnecting from the steering rack.

The recall impacts two 2021-2022 Hyundai Accent models produced by Kia Motor Mexico as well as six 2021-2022 Kia Rio models built between September 8, 2021 and February 21, 2022, in addition to 24 2021-2022 Kia Forte models manufactured from May 28, 2021 to March 8, 2022.

Both Hyundai and Kia dealers will fix the issue by simply retightening the bolt to specification.
