A pair of intriguing Nissan Z prototypes have been filmed testing on the streets of Arizona, leading to speculation that the Japanese automaker could be readying a handful of new options for the sports car.

The video was first shared to the New Nissan Z forum and on first impressions, you could be excused for thinking the two Zs featured are simply customer-owned examples. Look a little closer, however, and you will notice that one of the Zs has some camouflage across its front fascia.

While the camouflage does a reasonably good job of disguising some of the changes that appear tio have been made, it appears that this prototype has a front fascia similar to that of the Z Customized Proto concept that was unveiled in Japan back in January. The main point of difference between this bumper and the one that comes fitted to Z models sold elsewhere is that it has been split in two with a large horizontal slat. Nissan has also relocated the license plate holder further up the fascia.

Nissan debuted the Z Customized Proto concept pictured below earlier this year in Japan to preview a raft of aftermarket parts that could be available in the near future.

Some other minor changes could be afoot for the Nissan. For example, there is also some suggestion that this prototype sports different wheels and brake calipers than the regular Z, which could hint at Nissan developing some new options for the car.

While it is possible that Nissan is testing the split grille as it has plans to offer it in the U.S., it could also be that it is simply conducting hot weather testing for the Japanese-spec model.

The 2023 Nissan Z is a coupe that enthusiasts have been waiting many years for and based on the first reviews, it appears as though it has been worth the wait, even though the sports car has many of the same components as its predecessor. In the United States, it is available from as little as $39,990 excluding a $1,025 destination and handling charge while sitting at the top of the range is the Z Proto spec, available from $52,990 and capped at just 240 examples in the U.S.
