Los Angeles-based electric vehicle startup INDIEV announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) that will see the electronics manufacturer build the first INDI One prototype vehicles at its plant in Ohio.

“Our M.O.U. with INDIEV marks the beginning of many more discussions to come regarding the future of EV manufacturing in Ohio,” said Jerry Hsiao, Foxconn’s chief product officer. “Throughout this process, Foxconn is confident in its Ohio workforce to manufacture quality prototypes that will help INDIEV achieve future success.”

INDI EV was formed by Steve Orsario and Steven Offutt, two former Faraday Future executives, in 2017. They unveiled the INDI One in the fall of 2021, and it is described as a $45,000 electric crossover.

Slightly larger than, say, the Tesla Model Y or the Ford Mustang Mach-e, the vehicle is powered by a 95 kWh battery pack that should allow for a range of 300 miles (483 km), according to the brand. Moving the car along will be two electric motors that turn all four wheels and deliver a combined 410 hp (302 kW/416 PS).

In January, when INDIEV was presenting its crossover at CES, it said it would be accepting reservations in the first quarter of 2022 and would start delivering vehicles this year. That plan appears to have been changed, but it will now get Foxconn’s help with production.

“The INDI One is a unique vehicle and it demands the highest quality of automotive craftsmanship as well as consumer electronics manufacturing and engineering,” said INDIEV CEO Shi Hai. “Partnering with Foxconn, the world’s leader in consumer electronics, during this exciting time in their entry into electric vehicles means that INDI One drivers will lead the way into the future of personal transit.”

Foxconn assumed control of its Ohio facility in May of this year. The plant, once owned by General Motors, will produce Lordstown Motors’ electric pickup truck, which recently entered commercial production, and the Fisker Pear. The plant will also produce tractors for DBA Monarch Tractor.
