Ford recently decided to pull out of the conventional European small hatchback market by announcing that the Fiesta’s almost 50-year run would come to an end in 2023. But Opel shows no signs of giving up on its own supermini, as these spy shots of a facelifted Corsa show.

The sixth-generation Corsa was introduced in 2019 and shares a platform with sister brand Peugeot’s 208. Unfortunately for Opel (and its British equivalent, Vauxhall), Peugeot did a much better job with the crayons, and buyers gravitated towards the funkier-looking 208. While Peugeot’s supermini came second only to the Volkswagen Golf in a 2021 list of the best-selling cars in Europe, the Corsa was way down in eighth.

Opel will be hoping its upcoming Corsa facelift will help close that gap, and there’s a good chance it might. Why? Because although these pictures don’t give us a totally clear look at the car’s face, it’s very likely that the refreshed Corsa will employ the same distinctive “vizor” front-end design seen on cars like the Crossland, Grandland, and new Astra.

That means the headlights will blend seamlessly into a smooth, black center panel that’s simultaneously modern and reminiscent of the lamp and grille layouts of cars in the 1960s and 1970s. What goes around, eh? The Crossland received a similar facelift for 2021, so it would be unusual if Opel didn’t apply the new look to the Corsa, which should be announced early in 2023.

There’ll be some minor interior changes too, including updates to the infotainment system, but Opel definitely won’t be adopting Peugeot’s controversial, but increasingly copied dashboard layout that requires drivers to peer over the top of the steering wheel, rather than through it, to see the gauge cluster.

We’re not expecting any huge changes under the skin from the current car, which offers a choice of three-cylinder petrol power, four-cylinder diesel, and a pure EV, the battery version being the quickest of the lot thanks to its fairly generous 136 hp (138 PS) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm) outputs. But since Peugeot has already updated the e-208 to 154 hp (156 PS), it’s a given that Opel will do the same with the Corsa for the facelift, if not before.
