The 2023 BMW X1 is a step in the right direction and it appears the redesigned X2 will soon follow suit.

Spied undergoing testing near the Arctic Circle, the 2024 X2 will transition from a glorified hatchback into a proper crossover coupe.

While the model is still heavily camouflaged, it features a nearly vertical front fascia with a mesh grille and sweptback headlights.  They’re joined by air curtains as well as a wide central intake with a vertical support in the center.

Moving further back, there’s a rakish windscreen that flows into a steeply sloping roof. The model also sports streamlined bodywork, an angular shoulder line, and flush-mounted door handles.

The rear end is a radical departure as the redesigned crossover has an angular rear window that directs air to a sizable spoiler.  Further below, there’s an upright lower liftgate and wraparound taillights.

Since this particular prototype is the performance-oriented X2 M35i, it features a handful of special touches including stylish wheels that are backed up by a braking system with blue calipers.  The model also sports a lightly revised rear bumper and a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

Spy photographers haven’t gotten a good look inside, but the cabin will likely follow in the footsteps of the X1.  As a result, we can expect an upscale interior with a Curved Display that consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment system.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but we can expect a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder with 241 hp (180 kW / 244 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It should be paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

The X2 M35i could have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops approximately 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.  Spy photographers have also snapped an electric variant and it’s expected to echo the iX1, which has a 64.7 kWh battery pack that powers a dual-motor all-wheel drive system developing a combined output of 308 hp (230 kW / 313 PS) and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque.  This enables the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and have a WLTP range of up to 440 km (273 miles).
